Refinishing an MCM cherry wood 🍒table that I absolutely thought was walnut when I bought it!

Based on the original finish, I would have put money down that this table was walnut. Once I got sanding, I was thoroughly surprised that it was actually cherry 🍒!

Materials:

  • Wood finish: Osmo – Wood Wax Finish in Cognac
  • Wood sealant: Osmo – Polyx-Oil Clear in Satin

Step by step instructions:

  1. 🏝️ Sanded flat surfaces with my Dewalt random orbit sander using 100 grit, then 120 and smoothed with 150
  2. 🏖️ Used my Surfprep 3×4 electric ray sander to remove the finish from all the edges (legs and table skirt)- started with 100 grit film, then progressively used a 5mm foam pad in medium and then fine
  3. 🪵 Did some testing on the legs and decided on Osmo’s Cognac Wood Wax Finish
  4. 🪵 Applied the Cognac wood wax finish with a high-quality Elite brush
  5. 💪🏼 While durable on its own, since it would be getting a lot of use as a dining table, I also applied a coat of Osmo’s Polyx-Oil Clear in Satin for extra durability and a bit of a sheen ✨

One of the things I love about Osmo products, especially when working with large surfaces like this, is that they have a long open time. This means that I can apply to large sections without fear that it will dry before I have a chance to wipe the excess. It truly makes refinishing a lot more enjoyable when I’m not racing the clock.

This mid century modern table made the perfect housewarming gift for my sister 🥰
