Another Mission Thrift Store Hamilton find! This mid century modern dresser was in good shape when I found it. While the top had some scratches, I knew that with some hard work, it could be incredible!

Click here for a list of basic supplies you’ll need for your chalk paint project and here for the typical steps. For gel staining, here is a list of basic supplies.

Materials:

  • Annie Sloan chalk paint (Athenian Black)
  • Annie Sloan clear wax
  • General Finishes Nutmeg Gel Stain
  • General Finishes High-Performance Topcoat in a satin finish

How I refinished this piece:

I decided to sand the top and bottom frame. With so many edges, I knew I didn’t have the patience to sanded the drawers as well. Plus, my vision of the body being black felt like the right way to go.

After sanding, I used General Finishes Gel Stain in Nutmeg. While I usually only need one coat, I knew I wanted something a little darker for this so i went with two coats. After letting the stain cure for 60 hours (water base topcoat over oil base stain needs at least this amount of time in between), I applied the GF High-Performance Topcoat. I am IN LOVE with this topcoat. It truly gives such a gorgeous finish.

For the doors, drawers and the body, I taped (massive amounts of tape 🤣) and painted using Annie Sloan Athenian Black. The paint was sealed using Annie Sloan’s clear wax. I applied the first coat, let cure for 24 hours and then applied the second coat.

I did not love the hardware but when I removed it, I realized it was two pieces! Without the backplate, the pull was incredible. I cleaned it up and it gleamed 🤩

This piece has been given a new lease on life!

I'd love to know what you think!
