I have never seen a buffet with an open hutch like this and it is one of the most spectacular pieces I’ve ever worked on! The combination of woods and the shape of it is truly incredible 🥰

How I refinished this piece:

🪛 Removed the hardware and legs (to make sanding easier!)
🔺 Used my Bahco 1” pocket scraper with triangle shaped blade to remove finish from the spindles
🪛 Disassembled the hutch top; it was secured with wood screws

🏝️ Sanded drawers and frame with my Dewalt random orbit sander using 100 grit and smoothed with 150
‼️ This sanding takes so much time but it is ESSENTIAL for a consistent result

🪐 Worked in sections because of my basement space constraints
🏖️ Used my Surfprep 3×4 electric ray sander to remove the finish from from the legs and spindles; first used an interface pad with a 100 grit film and then smoothed with a medium 5mm profoam pad; these foam pads are perfect for the delicate curves

📼 Initially only was going to use Osmo’s Polyx-Oil in Amber on the light wood areas so taped off edges with Elite washi tape
🪵 Applied using a small Elite round brush and then buffed in the next coat with an Osmo Superpad
🪵 After conducting an Instagram poll, decided to applied the same Osmo Polyx-Oil Tints in Amber on the rest of the piece; used a roller to apply to the flat surfaces and the small Elite round brush for the edges

🏝️ Sanded with a 400 grit foam pad between coats; removed dust with a tack cloth

🎨 In between the 1st & 2nd coat, colour corrected a couple of spots that I oversanded using Coconix Furniture Repair Paint

For coat 2️⃣, used Polyx-Oil in Clear so not to further deepen the colour; again applied with a roller

For coat 3️⃣, buffed in the Polyx-Oil using an Osmo Superpad
👴🏻 Finished drawers with Grandpa Ernie’s sanding method; let me know if you need a further explanation

🪛 Reinstalled the leg tips, then the legs and doors; reassembled the hutch top
🥂 Installed new champagne gold hardware to match the colour of the original brass leg tips

I really didn’t realize how glorious this piece was until it had been reassembled and staged. It’s now ready for a brand new second life!
