I originally refinished nightstands that matched this chest of drawers so when I saw it at the Mission Thrift Store, I knew that the walnut wood grain would be incredible 🤩

Tools used:

How I refinished this piece:

🪛 Removed the hardware and removed bottom frame (I knew I was going to be installing new legs)
🪵 Added wood filler to the front edge to fill in the missing veneer
🔺Used my Bahco 1” pocket scraper with triangle shaped blade to remove finish from the top edge
🏝️ Sanded drawers, frame and legs with my Dewalt random orbit sander using 100 grit and smoothed with 150

🦵🏼Installed new 4” T-shaped legs
📼 Taped off edges with Elite washi tape
☕️ Country Chic Paint’s Dark Roast was the perfect choice for the front edges

🪵 Taped off the top edge and applied Osmo’s new Polyx-Oil Tints in Amber (for a more cohesive look); let dry for 24 hours
🪵 For the drawers and body, I applied Osmo’s Polyx-Oil Clear in matte with a roller

  • Coat 1️⃣ & 2️⃣: used both an Elite round brush (for the edges) and an Elite roller to apply (to the flat surfaces); completely saturated it and then squeezed out as much as possible on the tray chevrons to apply very thin coats; waited 8-10 hours in between

🏝️ Sanded with a 400 grit foam pad between coats; removed dust with a tack cloth

  • For coat 2️⃣, I again applied with a roller
  • For coat 3️⃣, buffed in the Polyx-Oil using an Osmo Superpad

🧼 Cleaned and reinstalled the hardware
👴🏻 Finished drawers with Grandpa Ernie’s sanding method; let me know if you need a further explanation 😏

These different wood tones and that top middle drawer wood grain is spectacular! Removing that base and installing new legs definitely modernized it 💃🏽

I'd love to know what you think!
